How do I layer my bed for a Delhi NCR winter?

For most Delhi NCR homes, a winter bed needs four things: a quilt chosen by its weight, a cotton duvet cover over it, a blanket you can add on the coldest nights, and a pillow that suits the way you sleep. Get the quilt right first, because it does most of the work, then build the rest around it.

Start with the quilt

The weight of a quilt's filling is written as GSM, grams per square metre. A higher number usually means a warmer, heavier quilt, so this one figure is the quickest way to compare two quilts on a screen.

At Jagdish Store, the Spread Mushy winter quilt is 350 GSM and costs ₹8,400 to ₹9,999. The Spread Moonwalker arctic fleece quilt is 700 GSM, the warmest we stock, at ₹15,550 for single and ₹17,999 for king, in five colours.

A room with a heater, or a flat that holds its warmth, may be comfortable under the lighter quilt. An unheated room, a top floor or a bed against an outside wall is where the heavier one earns its place. If you are torn, come and feel both at the shop. Weight on paper and warmth in the hand do not always line up, which is why we keep the whole range on display. See every option on our winter quilts and dohars page.

Put a cotton cover over it

Your duvet cover keeps the quilt clean, so you wash the cover through the season and leave the quilt alone. It is also the layer you actually touch, which makes the fabric worth choosing with care.

Thread count changes how a cover feels. Ours come in three: the Amalfi jacquard at 550 TC, ₹8,399 in king size, with the pattern woven into the cloth in nine colours; plain 600 TC cotton; and the Merrowing range at 800 TC, ₹13,299 in queen size and ₹13,599 in king. As the count rises, the weave gets denser and smoother. Our thread count guide explains the difference in more detail.

Size matters more than most people expect. Measure the quilt, not the bed, and pick the cover that matches it, so the quilt does not slide and bunch inside. If your quilt is an unusual size, Jagdish Store stitches duvet covers to any size in 550, 600 and 800 TC cotton. Browse the full range of duvet covers.

Keep a blanket within reach

Winter nights here are not the same from one week to the next. A blanket folded at the foot of the bed lets you add warmth when the cold sets in properly, without changing the quilt for the whole season.

Most of our blankets are acrylic, a soft fibre that weighs less than wool of the same thickness and holds deep colour well. The Pierre Cardin Nancy blanket comes in eighteen solid shades, at ₹23,099 for single and ₹30,599 for king. Mora blankets, imported from Spain, come in solids, geometric weaves and an embossed leaf design.

Before you order, check the width. Add twice the depth of your mattress to its width, then compare that with the width of the blanket. The difference is how far it will fall over each side. Every size is listed on our blankets page.

Choose the pillow last, but do not skip it

The pillow is the part of the bed you notice each night, whatever the season. Spread's Doctor Pillow is their support pillow, and we stock both sizes: the standard 18 x 27 inch Doctor Pillow at ₹3,199, and the larger 22 x 33 inch Doctor President Pillow at ₹4,600. For something softer, the Spread Mushy pillow starts at ₹1,850.

Pillow height comes down to your shoulders and whether you sleep on your back or your side, and no product page can judge that for you. Lie on a few at the showroom before you decide, or compare goose down, latex and microfibre on our pillows page.

The four layers at a glance

Layer What to check Where to start
Quilt GSM, and how cold the room gets Mushy 350 GSM or Moonwalker 700 GSM
Duvet cover The size of your quilt, then thread count Amalfi 550 TC or Merrowing 800 TC
Blanket Width against your mattress, and material Pierre Cardin Nancy or Mora
Pillow Height and filling, tried in person Doctor Pillow or Mushy

Looking after winter bedding

When a new blanket arrives, open it out in an airy room for an hour before the first night, so the packing folds relax. Follow the care label on each piece. At the end of winter, wash or clean everything as the label says, let it dry fully, and store it in a cotton bag in the almirah rather than plastic, so it comes out fresh next year.

Every quilt, cover, blanket and pillow in this guide can be seen at Jagdish Store, Shops 21 to 24, Ireo City Centre, Sector 59, Gurugram 122101, or ordered online for delivery across India.
