Reupholstering is a decision you live with for years, not a purchase you forget by evening. These are the fabrics we stock for sofas, armchairs, dining chairs and headboards, sold by the metre, so a two seater and a ten seater are the same conversation with a different number at the end.

Jagdish Store has been sourcing furnishing textiles in Gurugram since 1965. Polysilks, jutes, jacquards and checks sit on the same racks, and the ones that did not hold up stopped being stocked a long time ago.

Before you commit the whole sofa

Fabric behaves differently once it is stretched over a frame. A weave that feels soft on the roll can read flat across a long sofa back, and a pattern that charms you in a small swatch can take over a room at full size.

Two things settle it. Look at the cloth in your own light, because the same beige shifts between showroom lighting and a north facing room in Gurugram. Then think about who actually sits there. A formal drawing room and a sofa that takes three children after school are not the same brief, and the second one usually wants a tighter weave.

Working out how many metres

Upholsterers measure in running metres, and your upholsterer's number is the one to trust. They know how your particular frame eats cloth, and a photograph never shows that.

Two things push the total up. Patterns that have to line up across cushions waste more than people expect, and deep buttoning or piping adds again. Order slightly above the final count. Dye lots vary, and a top-up order months later rarely matches what came before.

Questions people ask before ordering

Can I use the same fabric on a sofa and on curtains?

Many of our multipurpose fabrics are woven for both jobs. Curtains want drape and upholstery wants density, so ask us before assuming a roll will do both.

Do you sell samples?

Yes. Ask for a swatch before a large order. Seeing cloth in your own room beats any photograph on a screen.

How do I clean upholstery fabric?

Vacuum weekly with a soft brush head to lift the grit that wears fibres down. For polysilks and heavy weaves, use professional dry cleaning rather than anything at home.
