Which upholstery fabric is best for a sofa in an Indian home?

For most Indian homes, the best sofa fabric is a tightly woven polyester or a textured weave graded for everyday home use, which our product pages mark as 15,000 to 30,000 rubs. If the sofa takes children, pets or a lot of guests, choose a heavy-use fabric such as leatherette, graded 30,000 to 50,000 rubs.

That's the short answer. The longer one depends on who sits on your sofa and the look you want, so let's walk through it the way we would at the counter.

First, who actually sits on this sofa?

A drawing room sofa that welcomes guests twice a week and a family sofa that hosts homework, tea and a dog every evening are two different jobs. Before you fall for a colour, picture a normal Tuesday on that sofa. That picture decides the fabric more than any trend does.

For a quieter room you can choose almost anything that feels right under your hand. For a busy family sofa, look first at the rub count, then at the weave: a tight, textured weave hides small marks and everyday wear far better than a smooth, flat one.

The main sofa fabrics, side by side

Here is how the fabrics on our racks compare. Every figure comes from the product pages on our website.

Fabric Our example Rub grade Weight Price a metre
Woven polyester, patterned Bikaner collection: Amer, Qila, Sawai, Silvana, Universe Everyday home 390 GSM ₹1,440 to ₹1,780
Two-tone texture Lukora, 21 colours Everyday home 320 GSM ₹1,780
Chenille Linora, 26 colours Ask us 400 to 500 GSM ₹1,750 to ₹1,780
Velvet Wilvian two-tone velvet, 34 colours Everyday home 250 GSM ₹695
Suede-finish leatherette Velthra, 21 colours Heavy use 520 GSM ₹1,710

All of these are 140 to 145 cm wide. GSM is the weight of a square metre of cloth, so a higher number means a heavier, denser fabric.

Which one suits your home?

A family sofa with children or pets

Look at the Velthra suede-finish leatherette. It is graded for heavy use, and at 520 GSM it is the heaviest fabric in the table. If you prefer the feel of cloth, a tightly woven, textured polyester such as Lukora is the next place to look.

A formal drawing room

Velvet and patterned weaves come into their own here. The Bikaner collection carries woven motifs, and the Wilvian two-tone velvet shifts gently in colour as light moves across it. Both are graded for everyday home use, which suits a room that sees guests rather than daily wear and tear.

A calm, modern living room

Plain chenille and two-tone textures give a quiet, soft look. Linora comes in 26 colours from ivory and sand to sage and charcoal, and Lukora in 21, so matching curtains and walls is easier than you might think.

Three things to check before you commit the whole sofa

  1. See it in your own light. The same beige can look warm in our showroom and grey in a north facing room. Take a swatch home first.
  2. Check the pattern repeat. Large motifs have to line up across the back, seat and cushions, which uses more fabric. The Bikaner designs carry repeats from about 23 to 64 cm, and our tailor checks this before cutting.
  3. Work out the metres. A modern sofa takes about 4.5 metres per seat. Our guide on how much upholstery fabric a sofa needs covers every shape, and what rub count sofa fabric should have explains the grades in more detail.

Questions people ask us about sofa fabric

Is velvet a good idea for a sofa?

Yes, if the room suits it. Our Wilvian two-tone velvet is graded for everyday home use and comes in 34 colours at ₹695 a metre. It suits a drawing room or a reading chair beautifully. For a sofa that takes pets every day, a heavy-use leatherette is the safer choice.

Is leatherette the same as real leather?

No. Leatherette is a faux leather with a PVC or PU surface, not animal hide. At Jagdish Store our Velthra suede-finish leatherette is graded for heavy use at 30,000 to 50,000 rubs, weighs 520 GSM and costs ₹1,710 a metre, in 21 colours.

Is polysilk the same as silk?

Not quite. Polysilk is a polyester fabric woven to give a silk-like sheen, so it is not real silk. If you see a sofa fabric called silk, ask whether it is pure silk or polysilk before you buy.
