A modern sofa needs about 4.5 metres of upholstery fabric, often called sofa fabric, per seat, so a three seater takes roughly 13.5 metres. That figure is the one Jagdish Store uses in its Gurugram workroom, and it covers both the seat and the back of each place on the sofa.
The rest of this page gives the figure for every common sofa and chair shape, a worked example, and what happens before a single metre is cut.
Metres per seat, by sofa and chair type
These are the quantities our workroom plans with. Each one covers the seat and the back.
| Piece | Fabric needed |
|---|---|
| Modern sofa | 4.5 metres per seat |
| Chesterfield sofa | 4.5 metres per seat |
| Indian carved sofa | 3.5 metres per seat |
| Single seater sofa chair | 6 metres |
| Recliner or lounge chair | 6 metres |
| Slipper chair | 4 metres |
Carved Indian sofas need less because the wooden frame shows. Fabric only covers the cushioned panels, not the arms and outer sides.
A single chair needs more than one seat of a sofa because it has two arms, a full outer back and no neighbour sharing a side.
Working it out for your room
Multiply the seats by the figure for your sofa type, then add any chairs.
- A three seater modern sofa: 3 x 4.5 = 13.5 metres
- A two seater Indian carved sofa: 2 x 3.5 = 7 metres
- One recliner: 6 metres
For a living room with all three, that is 26.5 metres in total.
Why a large pattern can change the number
Plain fabrics and small textures can be cut in any direction, so very little is wasted. A large motif or a bold stripe has to line up across the back, the seat and the cushions, and matching it uses extra fabric. Our tailor checks the repeat on your chosen fabric and confirms the final metres at the home visit, before anything is cut.
What re-covering costs on top of the fabric
Re-covering labour starts at ₹2,500 per seat for every sofa and chair style. The exact price depends on the frame, the foam and the stitching detail you choose, so it is quoted at the home visit rather than online. Ottomans, benches and headboards are ₹2,500 a piece.
How the home visit works
You book the tailor's visit online by date and time. Slots run every hour from 11 am to 6 pm, any day, from tomorrow up to 60 days ahead.
To book, you pay at least 20 percent of the fabric value as an advance. It is not refundable, and it is adjusted in your final bill. Ordering the full fabric also books the visit.
At the visit the tailor measures the actual frame, confirms the metres and gives the labour estimate. If the work comes to more than you paid at order, the difference is added to your final bill. If it comes to less, the difference is refunded.
Frequently asked questions
Does the per seat figure include the back cushions? Yes. Every per seat figure on this page covers the seat and the back of that place on the sofa. Loose scatter cushions are separate and can be added in the same order, choosing each cushion size and quantity.
Why does a single chair need more fabric than one sofa seat? A single chair has two arms, a full outer back and two outer sides of its own. One seat of a sofa shares its sides with the seats beside it, so it needs less fabric.
Can I order fabric first and book the tailor later? Yes. Ordering the full fabric books the visit, and the tailor confirms the exact metres at your home before cutting. If you prefer to see the frame measured first, pay the 20 percent advance and choose a slot.
