Walk into a bedding shop in winter and the words blur together. Four different things keep a bed warm, and they are not the same product.
Blanket
One layer of woven or knitted fabric: wool, fleece, acrylic or cotton. It warms you by trapping body heat in the fibres. Easy to layer, easy to wash.
Quilt
Three layers stitched together: a top fabric, a filling (cotton, wool or polyester) and a backing. The stitching stops the filling from bunching. Light quilts suit air-conditioned rooms. Thick ones suit cold nights.
Comforter
A thicker, fluffier quilted bed cover, filled with down, feathers or polyester fibre. It is made for cold weather and usually sits on top of the bed as the main cover.
Duvet
A soft filled insert that goes inside a removable duvet cover. The cover is what you see and what you wash. When the design bores you, change the cover, not the duvet.
Which one should you pick?
- Sleeping under an AC in summer: a light quilt or a dohar.
- Cold winter nights: a comforter or a filled quilt.
- Hate washing heavy bedding: a duvet with two covers.
- Spare bed for guests: a blanket that folds small.
Buying a quilt or comforter online
Check three things. The filling: down is warmest and costs most, polyester is lighter on the wallet. The stitching: double-stitched seams last longer. And the size: measure your mattress before you order.
